Potential Draft Picks – Elias Pettersson

Back in February, we gave you five players that the Flyers could potentially go after in this year’s draft. Now with the standings looking a bit different and the Flyers possibly messing up their own draft position here are five more talented players that could wind up in the Flyers system.

Previous Potential Draft Target – Cody Glass

Elias Pettersson

C, Timrå, SWE

The seems to be the obvious choice for the Flyers if the crafty swede falls to them. The flyers have questions at center, and this season has led to some investigation into Claude Giroux’s steady decline over the last few seasons. Enter Elias Pettersson, the 6’2 center is capable of lighting up the scoreboard while holding the opposition’s star players off of it. If we’re looking past the days of our current core, Pettersson could be a big piece.

Elias plays a very aggressive game and with his heart on his sleeve. Weighing in at only 161lbs, the center has a bit of muscle building to do, but once he does add some weight he can be a dangerous player. There isn’t a flaw to be found in his game. He can skate with the best of them, he can dangle in a phone booth, he can beat you in the corner boards and he can beat any goalie with his crafty moves. In his sophomore season with Timra IK of Allsvenskan, the second-tier league to the SHL, Pettersson has amassed 40 points in 43 games, coming in at second on his team in scoring behind Jonathan Dahlen, who was acquired by the Vancouver Canucks through the Burrows trade.

Elias didn’t exactly light up the WJC, but he played a great game while being tasked with shutting down the premier lines of the opposing teams. If the Flyers continue to fall in the standings, it seems likely this is a match made in heaven, as Elias is projected to go anywhere from #7 to # 14 in the upcoming draft, which scouts have routinely called a “weak” draft.
