Practice began today at Skate Zone in Vorhees for the Flyers alumni game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. It’s a celebration of both organizations’ 50th season, as members of the first NHL expansion in 1967.
The full roster was announced a few weeks ago, and features some of the best players Philadelphia has ever seen, including four Hall of Fame inductees: Bob Clarke, Bill Barber, Mark Howe, and 2016 inductee Eric Lindros. The roster also includes players from every era of Flyers hockey including a member of the original 1967 roster (Joe Watson) as well as players as recent as 2013 (Simon Gagne, Danny Briere, and Brian Boucher).
The most exciting line for most Flyers fans will be the reunion of the “Legion of Doom,” Eric Lindros, John LeClair, and Mikael Renberg. In just three seasons in Philadelphia, the Legion of Doom combined for almost 800 points, and led the Flyers to the 1997 Stanley Cup final.
But nearly as exciting as the reunion of the Legion of Doom is the reunion of the L-C-B line: Reggie Leach, Bob Clarke, and Bill Barber. Clarke and Barber both won the Stanley Cup with the Flyers in 1974 and 1975, and Leach joined them in 1975.
Four Flyers alumni are also Penguins alumni, and will be suiting up for Pittsburgh instead of the Flyers: defensemen Jeff Chychrun and Gordie Roberts, and forwards Mike Bullard and Mitch Lamoureaux.
Notable absences on the Flyers roster are Rick Tocchet and Mark Recchi, who are both currently members of the Penguins staff (assistant coach and player development coach, respectively) and will not be available for the alumni game.
