In 1967, the Philadelphia Flyers entered the league, along with five other teams, as part of the first NHL expansion. 2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of the first set of expansion teams and we’ve already heard about some plans to celebrate the occasion.
The Flyers and the Penguins entered the league as part of the same expansion. This interstate rivalry is one of the most intense in the league, so what could be more fitting for the 50th than a Keystone State battle outdoors? There have been rumors about a Flyers/Pens outdoor game for a while. Back in 2013, we thought the Flyers were a lock for the 2015 Winter Classic. Ever since then, fans have been calling for a Flyers/Penguins game; the neutral Beaver Stadium proposed as the arena.
Now we have news from inside the Flyers Season Ticket holder town hall event and is sounds like the plan is underway.

Unfortunately, if we are getting an outdoor game it’s not going to be the Winter Classic. The Toronto Maple Leafs will also be celebrating their centennial in 2017. As part of the 100 year anniversary, the team is getting a new logo and uniforms and the Winter Classic. So if anything, Flyers/Pens would be part of the Stadium Series.
It’s also being rumored that the Flyers will get all new alternate jerseys for the 2016-2017 season. In their “Jersey Watch”, Icetethics says that Reebok has been talking to retailers about new jerseys. Icethetics does a little bit of speculation about what teams may be getting new looks and the Flyers is on their list.
The Flyers were part of the same 1967 expansion as the Kings so they too will be celebrating a half-century next season. And wouldn’t you know they also have a “special edition” jersey on the way, according to Reebok.
If it’s tough to pin down an old Kings jersey we haven’t seen in a while, it’s practically impossible for Philadelphia. However, from 1982 to 2007, the Flyers wore a very distinctive jersey design. The interesting thing is that it was nearly the same template as that Kings jersey from the 1980s.
Here’s the Jersey they predict we could be seeing (rendered by Andrew Greenstein at NHLUniforms.com):
