The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed center Sean Couturier to a multi-year contract extension. The contract is six years $25.98 mm. It will be a yearly cap hit of $4.33 mm per season.
Couturier has played four seasons in the NHL. Couturier has recorded 45 goals and 73 assists for 118 points in 287 career games.
Couturier should do well under new coach Dave Hakstol’s system, which will involve the defense in the rush. That’ll give Couturier more offensive zone starts, giving him more chances to become an offensive threat. A multi-year extension shows a level of commitment to the Flyers shut-down center that most fans didn’t think was there.
For years, Couturier has been one of the few names that was constantly involved in possible trade rumors. With Berube coaching the team, there seemed to be major disappointment in Couturier’s point production. There’s a good chance that, under Hakstol’s system, the pieces will finally fall into place for Coots to have a breakout season.
