The Flyers announced that they have signed KHL veteran defenseman Yevgeny Medvedev. Medvedev, 32, has spent the past 8 seasons playing for the Kazan Ak-Bars of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) and will be making his North America debut next season.

Eliteprospects.com describes him as “A large, yet very mobile and smooth skating defenseman. Medvedev sees the ice well and has good hockey sense. He can pass really well, but also possesses a hard shot.” They also go on to mention he does not play a very physical game even thought he has the size to do so.

With this signing, the Flyers now have 8 defenseman under a NHL contract, not counting RFA Michael Del-Zotto. We have to think that Hextall has a plan in place to trade some of these guys away, with the top candidates being Nicklas Grossmann, Luke Schenn, and Mark Streit.

Here is his Peter Forsberg impression in a KHL pre-season game.
