After a knee jerk play in Saturday’s game against Boston, Steve Mason is expected to miss at least two weeks with a “lower body injury”. An unfortunate situation for the Flyers however is another career opportunity for 33 year old goalie Rob Zepp. Zepp has been recalled while Mason is out and is on his 2nd stint as an NHL goalie. The last time Zepp was up with the Flyers he played and won his first NHL game stopping 25 shots in the Flyers 4-3 overtime win against Winnipeg. Since his return to the Phantoms Zepp seems to have benefited from the confidence boost going 3-0-0, 1.9 goals against and a .942 save percentage.
Tonight Zepp gets his 2nd NHL start against the Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that the Flyers have struggled against for at least 2 seasons. Lightning captain Steven Stamkos thinks that Zepp being in goal might make the Flyers harder to play against.
Stamkos: I think in certain ways teams are more dangerous when they have a goalie like that in because they want to succeed w/that guy in.

It’s true that the Flyers have a habit of playing harder for backup goalie Ray Emery this season, but will they play even harder for a 3rd goalie? Hopefully. To keep Zepp from completely losing his confidence the Flyers may want to stay off the penalty kill as it’s been absolutely terrible so far this season. Good luck Zepp, you may need it.
Also tonight is Captain Claude’s 27th birthday! Hopefully he can stay out of the news after his party later.
