Phillies Weekly

The Phillies started off the week on Sunday with an 8-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Marlon Byrd went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored, 1 RBI, and hit his 19th homer of the season. Kyle Kendrick received his 10th loss of the season as he went 5 innings, gave up 6 runs, walked 2, and struck out 1. On Monday, the Phillies activated Cliff Lee, Wil Nieves, and Reid Brignac from the DL and designated Tony Gwynn Jr for assignment. The Phillies fell to the San Francisco Giants 7-4 on Monday. Cody Asche went 3 for 4 with 1 run scored. Cliff Lee received his 5th loss of the year as it was his first start off of the DL and Lee went 5 2/3 innings, gave up 12 hits, 6 runs, walked 1, and struck out 3.

The Phillies placed outfielder John Mayberry Jr on the 15 day DL and called up first baseman Darin Ruf. The Phillies fell to the Giants on Tuesday with the score of 9-6 in 14 innings. Ben Revere went 3 for 6 with 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. Roberto Hernandez received the no decision as he went 5 2/3 innings, gave up 5 hits, 3 runs, walked 3, and struck out 1. Jeff Manship received his 2nd loss of the season as he went 2 innings, gave up 5 hits, 4 runs, walked 4, and struck out 2. Jonathan Papelbon blew his 3rd save of the year as he went 2 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, and struck out 2. The Phillies activated Carlos Ruiz off of the DL and called up Philippe Aumont to replace Jeff Manship who was sent down.

The Phillies fell to the Giants 3-1 on Wednesday. Carlos Ruiz went 2 for 4 in his return to the field. A.J. Burnett received the no decision as he went 8 innings, gave up 4 hits, walked 4, and struck out 6. Jonathan Papelbon received his 2nd loss as he went 1 inning, gave up 1 hit, 3 runs, walked 2, and struck out 2. The Phillies beat the Giants 2-1 on Thursday. Chase Utley went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and 1 walk. Cole Hamels picked up his 5th win as he went 8 innings, gave up 6 hits, 1 run, walked 1, and struck out 10. Jonathan Papelbon picked up his 24th save as he went 1 inning and struck out 1.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr emphatically shot down the full week of rumors of Ryan Howard’s possible release at the end of the season as he said, “That is not something we are contemplating. I don’t know where that is coming from.”

The Phillies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-5 on Friday. Grady Sizemore went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Kyle Kendrick picked up his 5th win of the year as he went 5 2/3 innings, gave up 6 hits, 3 runs, walked 1, and struck out 5. The Phillies fell to the D-Backs 10-6 in 10 innings on Saturday. Chase Utley went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI and  walked once. Cliff Lee received the no decision as he went 5 innings, gave up 9 hits, 3 runs, walked 2, and struck out 4. Antonio Bastardo received his 4th loss as he went 1 inning as he gave up 3 hits, 4 runs, and walked 1.
