Phillies Weekly – Mediocrity at it’s finest

The Phillies started off their week being swept by the Atlanta Braves on Sunday with the score of 3-2. Marlon Byrd went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs, and hit his 15th homer of the season in the loss. David Buchanan received his 4th loss of the year as he went 5 innings, gave up 5 hits, 3 runs, walked 5, and struck out 4. The Phillies made a minor trade sending shortstop Ronny Cedeno to the Arizona Diamondbacks for catcher Raywilly Gomez.

The Phillies fell to the Miami Marlins 5-4 in 11 innings on Tuesday. Marlon Byrd went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored,  1 RBI, walked once, and hit his 16th homer of the season. Cody Asche went 2 for 5 with 1 run scored, 1 RBI, hit his 5th homer of the season. A.J. Burnett received a no decision as he went 6 innings, gave up 6 hits, 4 runs but only 3 earned runs, walked 4 batters, and struck out 10 batters. Justin De Fratus received his 1st loss of the year as he went 1 1/3 innings, gave up 2 hits, and 1 run. The Phillies placed Dom Brown on paternity leave, called up Aaron Altherr, and activated Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez from the DL. The Phillies signed 2 16 year old Venezuelan shortstops in Arquimedes Gamboa and Daniel Brito on Wednesday.

The Phillies fell to the Marlins 5-0 on Wednesday. This was the 11th time the Phillies were shutout this season.  Ben Revere and Jimmy Rollins went a combined 4 for 8 in the loss. Cole Hamels received his 5th loss of the season as he went 5 innings,  5 hits, 3 runs, walked 4, and struck out 3. There were leaked Houston Astros trade talk files that included the Phillies. The Phillies avoided the sweep on Thursday as they beat the Marlins 5-4. Ben Revere went 2 for 5 with 1 run scored. Kyle Kendrick received the no decision as he went 7 innings, gave up 6 hits, 2 runs, walked 1, and struck out 4. Jake Diekman picked up his 3rd win and Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 19th save.

The Phillies fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-2 on Friday, Fourth of July. Chase Utley went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI. Roberto Hernandez received his 8th loss of the year as he went 5 2/3 innings, gave up 10 hits, 5 runs, walked 4, and struck out 3. The Phillies fell to the Pirates 3-2 on Saturday. Cody Asche went 1 for 4 with1 run scored, 1 RBI, and hit his 6th homer of the season. David Buchanan received his 5th loss of the year as he went 6 innings, gave up 6 hits, 3 runs, walked 1, and struck out 3.
