It was first reported by the Philadelphia Daily News that Eagles second year right tackle Lane Johnson tested positive for PEDs. Johnson is only 24 years of age and was the Eagles 1st round draft pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Johnson is not the only Eagle to be test positive for PEDs as linebacker Jake Knott was suspended for the first 4 games of the season back in April. Both players are still allowed to participate in training camp and the preseason.
Johnson started all 16 games last season and his presence in the first 4 games of this season will be felt but the team does have all of training camp and preseason to create continuity and chemistry to give Nick Foles some time in the pocket and Shady McCoy some running room to do what Shady does. Johnson’s suspension is also important because the entire Eagles starting offensive line played every game last year For the first time since 2006.
The Eagles do have some candidates to fill in the starting tackle position in Allen Barbre, Matt Tobin, and Dennis Kelly. Barbre is the backup for Johnson and was signed to a 3 year extension recently. Although Kelly is a candidate to play tackle while Johnson is out, Kelly started 10 games in 2012 but did not play last season. The team is high on Tobin but he is only a second year player and will most likely be playing if Barbre and Kelly get hurt.
With the suspension being 4 games you have to look at the Eagles first 4 games of the season. The Eagles play the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1 at home, the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2 at Indianapolis, the Washington Redskins in Week 3 at home, and the San Francisco 49ers at San Fran. The first 2 games aren’t to big of tests as Jacksonville and Indianapolis don’t have too good of pass rushes but Washington has Ryan Kerrigan who had 8.5 sacks last season and the 49ers have Ahmad Brooks who had 8.5 sacks last season. Hopefully the Eagles figure something out to fill the spot for the time being in those 4 games and play well enough so this Lane Johnson will not be an issue when the 4 games are up.
