Phillies Weekly – Cooled Off

The Phillies began the week with a 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Third baseman Cody Asche went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI in the loss. Kyle Kendrick received his 7th loss of the year as he went 6 innings, gave up 5 runs, walked 1 and struck out 2. Set up man Mike Adams’ pain in his shoulder has gone away and is planning a return to the Phils’ after the All-Star break. Phillies top draft pick Aaron Nola made his pro debut on Monday and he went 2 1/3 innings, gave up 5 runs but 4 earned runs, 3 hits, and striking out 3. Cuban pitcher Migeul Alfredo Gonzalez pitched 2 scoreless innings, gave up 2 hits, and struck out 2.

On Monday, the Phillies honored J-Roll for passing Mike Schmidt’s team hits record before the game against the Miami Marlins. The Phillies were then shut out 4-0 by the Marlins. Cody Asche went 3 for 3 in the loss. Roberto Hernandez received his 6th loss of the year as he went 6 innings, gave up 3 hits, 2 runs, walked 3, and struck out 6. The Phillies signed former Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox outfielder Grady Sizemore to a minor league deal. Cliff Lee threw another bullpen session to rehab his left elbow strain.  The Phillies beat the Marlins 7-4 on Tuesday to snap a 3 game losing streak. Marlon Byrd went 1 for 4 with 1 run scored, drove in 2 RBI, and hit his 13th homer of the year. David Buchanan got his 4th win of the year as he went 5 innings, gave up 6 hits, 2 runs, walked 4, and struck out 2. Jonathan Papelbon picked up his 18th save of the year.

The Phillies fell to the Marlins 3-2 on Wednesday. Marlon Byrd went 3 for 4 with 1 run scored in the loss. A.J. Burnett received his 7th loss as he went 7 innings, gave up 5 hits, 3 runs, walked 3, and struck out 8. The Phillies avoided the sweep as they beat the Marlins 5-3 in 14 innings on Thursday. Chase Utley went 3 for 7 with 2 runs scored, 3 RBI, and hit the walk off 3 run homer in the 14th which was his 6th homer of the year. Cole Hamels received the the no decision as he went 7 innings, gave up 6 hits, 3 runs, and struck out 7. The bullpen went an astonishing 7 innings of shutting out the Marlins. Justin De Fratus received his 2nd win as he went 2 innings and only gave up 1 hit. The Phillies placed Carlos Ruiz on the 7-day disabled list as he was in the head with a pitch in the 11th inning of the 14 inning win against the Marlins.

The Phillies fell 4-2 to the Atlanta Braves on Friday. Ben Revere went 3 for 4 with 1 run scored in the loss. Kyle Kendrick received his 8th loss of the season as he went 8 innings, gave up 9 hits, 4 runs, walked 2, a and struck out 8.

The Phillies fell to the Braves 10-3 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader on Saturday. Tony Gwynn Jr. went 2 for 3 with 1 run scored. Roberto Hernandez received his 7th loss of the year as he went 7 innings, gave up 3 hits, 4 runs but 2 earned runs, walked 3, and struck out 2. Antonio Bastardo went 1/3 of an inning, gave up 3 hits, 5 runs, and walked 2. The Phillies fell to the Braves 5-1 in the second game of a day-night doubleheader on Saturday. Catcher Cameron Rupp went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored. Rookie Sean O’Sullivan made his MLB debut in a spot start as he went 5 2/3 innings, gave up 8 hits, 4 runs, and struck out 3.
