Phillies Weekly – Finding Their Stride

The Phillies started off the week on Sunday with a 3-0 loss against the Chicago Cubs. The Phillies had only three hits in this game as a team and were just dominated by the Cubs Travis Wood. A.J. Burnett had a solid outing as he went 8 innings, 3 earned runs, 4 strikeouts, and obviously got no run support for his efforts. Rookie flamethrower Ken Giles came in this game in the 9th and went 1 inning and struck out 2 batters. On Monday, the baseball world was shocked by the death of Tony Gwynn Sr. at the age of 54 due to cancer. Phillies outfielder Tony Gwynn  Jr. was placed on the bereavement list on Monday due to this and the Phillies have called up outfielder Aaron Altherr from Double-A to replace Gwynn Jr.

On Monday, the Phillies defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-1 in 13 innings. Ryan Howard went 1 for 5, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, 1 walk, and hit his 12th homer of the season. Reid Brignac continues to shine as he went 3 for 6 with 2 RBI. Cole Hamels has had yet another solid outing as he went 7 innings, gave up 5 hits, walked 2, struck out 6, but did not get the win. Jonathan Papelbon blew his second save in the bottom of the ninth. Antonio Bastardo picked up his 4th win as he went 2 innings, gave up 1, and struck out 1. Cliff Lee continued to rehab his strained left  elbow as he threw off of the mound on Tuesday and eyes a return to the mound in July. The Phillies beat the Braves 5-2 on Tuesday. Ryan Howard went 1 for 3 with 1 run scored, 2 RBI, 2 walks, and he hit his 13th homer of the year. Kyle Kendrick recorded his 3rd win as he went 7 innings, gave up 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, and struck out 6. Jake Diekman recorded his 9th hold and Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 16th save.

On Wednesday, the Phillies swept the Braves with a 10-5 win. The entire Phillies lineup was firing on all as they tied the team high hits for the season at 18. One negative thing that came out of the lineup as backup catcher Wil Nieves, who played in this game, injured his quad during the game. Ben Revere sat out of this game with an injured knee. Robert Hernandez had a good outing as he went 6 innings, gave up 5 runs, walked 5, struck out 2, and picked up his 3rd win of the year. On Thursday, the Phillies called up catcher Cameron Rupp and optioned outfielder Aaron Altherr to Double-A.

The Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 on Thursday for their 4th straight win. Utley and Howard went for a combined 4 for 8, 3 runs scored, 3 RBI, and Howard hit his 14th homer. David Buchanan got his 3rd win and went 7 2/3 innings, gave up 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and struck out 4. Jake Diekman recorded his 10th hold and Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 17th save. On Friday, Reid Brignac was placed on the 15 day DL with a left ankle sprain and activated Cody Asche off of the Dl as he was out for a while with a left hamstring strain. The Phillies beat the Cardinals 5-1 on Friday for their 5th straight win. John Mayberry went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI. A.J. Burnett recorded his 5th win and his 24th career complete game as he went 9 innings, gave up 7 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and struck out 3. The Phillies had their 5 game win streak snapped on Saturday in a 4-1 loss to the Cardinals. Jimmy Rollins went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI. Cole Hamels received his 4th loss as he went 7 1/3, gave up 5 hits, 3 runs, 5 walks, 8 strikeouts.
