Phillies Weekly – A Tough Week

The Phillies started off of the week on Sunday with a 4-3 loss to the New York Mets in 11 innings. Ryan Howard with 1 for 5 with 1 run scored, 2 RBI, and hit his 11th home run on the season. Marlon Byrd also went 1 for 5 with 1 run scored, 1 RBI , and hit his 8th home run on the season. Cole Hamels had a strong start as he went 7 innings, gave up 6 hits, 2 runs but only 1 earned run, walked 4 batters, struck out 8 batters, got the no decision in the game. Philippe Aumont got the loss as he went 1 inning and gave up the game losing 2 run homer. The Phillies fell to the Mets 11-2 in the final game of the 5 game series on Monday. Ben Revere and Reid Brignac were the only players who showed up offensively in this one as they went a combined 4 for 8 with 1 run scored. Roberto Hernandez struggled in this outing and got the loss as he went 5 1/3 innings, gave up 5 hits, 5 runs but only 4 earned runs, 2 walked batters, and struck out 5.

The Phillies went an atrocious 4-7 on the past 11 game homestand that ended with 11-2 loss to the Mets. On Tuesday, the Phillies signed veteran right hander Jason Marquis to a minor league deal. Also on Tuesday, the Phillies brought up Ethan Martin to work in the bullpen and sent down Philippe Aumont back to Triple-A. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said on Tuesday that the team is “getting closer” to rebuilding for the future. Despite the bad play of the Phillies, Chase Utley still leads National League second basemen in All Star Voting. Bench coach Larry Bowa had harsh words for the Phillies as he said the Phillies “aren’t playing like big leaguers”.

Manager Ryne Sandberg called a team meeting before the Phillies game against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday. This didn’t immediately help the Phillies as they were shutout by the Nationals 7-0. David Buchanan struggled mightily as he got the loss and he went 6 innings, gave up 10 hits, 7 earned runs, walked 2 batters, and struck out 6 strike outs. Darin Ruf was placed on the DL on Wednesday with sprained wrist. The Phillies fell to the Nationals again 8-4. Reid Brignac went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI in the loss. A.J. Burnett received his 5th loss of the year as he went 6 innings, gave up 10 hits, 8 earned runs, walked 4 batters, and struck out 3.

On Thursday, the Phillies selected right handed pitcher Aaron Nola with the 7th overall pick in the MLB draft. The Phillies were swept by the Nationals on Thursday as they lost 4-2. John Mayberry Jr, went 1 for 4, with 1 run scored, 1 RBI, and he hit his 4 homer of the year. Kyle Kendrick received his 6th loss of the year as he went 7 innings, gave up 6 hits, 4 earned runs, walked 5 batters, and struck out 2. Also on Thursday the Phillies called up infielder Ronny Cedeno and designated Cesar Jimenez for assignment. On Friday, the Phillies cut underachieving outfielder Tyson Gillies from the 40 man roster.

The Phillies snapped a 6 game losing streak as they beat Cincinnati Reds 8-0 on Friday. Jimmy Rollins went 1 for 4 with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI, 1 walk, and he hit his 7th home run of the year. Cole Hamels got his 2nd win of the year as he went 7 2/3 innings, gave up 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. On Saturday, reliever Mike Adams was placed on the DL and fireballer Ken Giles will be called up on Sunday. The Phillies fell to the Reds on Saturday 6-5. Domonic Brown went 3 for 4 in the loss to the Reds. Roberto Hernandez received his 4th of the year as he went 4 innings, gave up 4 hits, 4 earned runs, walked 3, and struck out 2.
