Missed Oppurtunities Against the Mets

The Phillies had the pleasure of hosting the hated New York Mets for 5 games. This was a very nice opportunity for the Phillies to not only catch up in the standings, but to do it at home for 5 games. Oh boy did they miss that opportunity by a long shot. The biggest reason was probably the terrible fundamental play from the whole Phillies team. To make it just a little bit worse there was a ridiculous amount of extra innings played throughout the 5 game home run which, unfortunately, didn’t mean a win.

Game 1:

The Mets beat the Phillies 4-1. The Phillies offense was very stagnant in this game as Marlon Byrd mustered the only bit of offense for the Phillies. Byrd went 1 for 3 but did have 1 RBI and his 7th home run of the season. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard struggled mightily in this game as they went a combined 0 for 8 with 7 strikeouts. Pitcher David Buchanan struggled in this start as he went a good amount of innings in 6 2/3 and gave up 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs, and 2 walked batters.

Game 2:

The Phillies beat the Mets 6-5 in 14 innings. In the Phillies only win of the series they needed extra innings to 5 extra innings to finish off the Mets. Carlos Ruiz had a standout game as he went 4 for 6 with 1 walk and 1 run scored. Domonic Brown had a timely 3 run homer in the fourth inning and hit 1 for 4 on the night. The hero of the night was Reid Brignac who went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI and 1 walk. Brignac hit the walk off single to left field in the bottom of the 14th at around 1 am. A.J. Burnett had a solid start as he went 7 innings and gave up 5 hits, 5 runs, 6 walks, and struck out 11. Reliever Justin De Fratus got his first win of the season as he went 2 innings and did not give up a hit.

Game 3:

The Mets defeated the Phillies 5-4 in 14 innings for the second straight game. Ben Revere went 2 for 7 in the loss. Ryan Howard went 2 for 6 with 1 run and 3 RBI. Howard also hit a three run homer in the loss. Kyle Kendrick went 6 innings and gave up 8 hits, 4 runs, and walked 2 batters. Reliever Jeff Manship went 4 innings in a stellar relief performance but did strain his right quad trying to beat out a grounder to give the Phillies a second straight walk off win.

Game 4:

The Mets beat the Phillies 4-3 in 11 innings. Carlos Ruiz went 2 for 5 with 1 run scored in the loss. Ryan Howard went 1 for 5 1 run scored. 2 RBI, and hit his 11th home run of the season. Cole Hamels went 7 innings and gave up 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 earner run, 4 walked batters, and 8 strikeouts ad he got the no decision. Philippe Aumont took his first loss of the season as he went 1 inning and gave up the game losing 2 run homer to the Mets Lucas Duda.

Game 5:

The Mets absolutely decimated the Phillies 11-2 in this game. Ben Revere and Reid Brignac combined for 4 for 8 and 1 run scored in the loss. Roberto Hernandez struggled in this one as he gave up 5 hits, 5 runs, 4 earned runs, and walked 2 batters. Reliever Jake Diekman also struggled as he only went 1/3 of an inning but gave up 2 hits, 4 earned runs, and walked 2 batters.
