This Week in Philly Sports

PHILLIES

Our Phightin’ Phils finally stopped the suspense and signed longtime Phillie Chase Utley to a 2 year, 27 million dollar deal which could end up to be worth up 5 years, 75 million with three vesting options. Utley said in a press conference after yesterday’s win, “I wanted to stay in this uniform.” Since the trade deadline past,  Michael Young and Jimmy Rollins have cleared waivers, but neither player is likely to be traded because of full no-trade clauses. Yesterday’s win was a good show by all the young players with Cody Asche hitting his first big league homer and Ethan Martin getting his first major league win.

Riley Cooper returned to practice after four days of sensitivity training. Jason Avant commented on the situation, “Guys are defintiely over it.” Also Demeco Ryans said, “We’ve put it behind us.” As the that situation has cooled down, the Chip Kelly Era starts tonight against the Patriots with Michael Vick as starting quarterback. Chip Kelly also said that Nick Foles will start the second preseason game.

FLYERS

Coach Peter Laviolette is hopeful about the players picked up in this eventful offseason. Laviolette said, “We added two guys who were captains of their teams before coming here and that should be a big help to our young group.” Coach Laviolette said about Ray Emery, “I was working for TSN in Canada and I was watching Emery play (for the Flyers) and I really liked him.” On the opposite side of that coin former Flyers enforcer Jody Shelley has retired and will be joining the his former team, Columbus Blue Jackets; likely as a broadcaster.
